But Holloway insists the fixture list over Christmas and New Year should be modified, with the Boxing Day fixture the first to go. "What I find hard to understand is we are playing five or six games in one month. What is that all about?" Holloway told reporters. "A winter break? That would be lovely. As a member of the British public, I would not want to go out on Boxing Day in the freezing cold. ” Holloway believes players and fans' time would be better spent resting at hom with their families. He added: "I would rather stay at home with my family and watch a film. Family is what it is all about. "Travelling the length and breadth of the country, it's crazy. We should stay at home and have some turkey."

Arrests at English, Welsh matches fall 10 percent

LONDON (AP) -The number of arrests by police at all domestic and international football matches in England and Wales fell 10 percent last season. The British government said Monday that a total of 3,391 fans were detained, down from 3,752 for the 2008-09 season, at an average of one arrest per match. Fans of Premier League clubs accounted for 1,125 arrests. Manchester United's biggest stadium and crowd meant it again led the list, although its 165 arrests were down from last season's 185. West Ham was next with 145 arrests. Fulham again had the topflight low, with seven. Assistant chief constable Andy Holt says Britain "has made steady progress in eradicating the behavior of those intent on football-related violence and disorder.'' Fifty-three percent of arrests were for disorder and about a third for alcohol-related offenses. Ticket scalping, property damage and running onto the field were also reasons. There were no arrests at 70 percent of games in England and Wales.

SHANE Warne says some of Ricky Ponting's captaincy is "all over the place" and Friday's second Test in Adelaide is the greatest leadership challenge of his career.

Warne, who was critical of Ponting's field placings during October's tour of India, launched another thinly veiled attack on the Test skipper when he said Ponting was not patient enough in the first Test and changed his plans far too quickly. "Everything Ricky tried did not work but some of the stuff he attempted was all over the place, rather than sticking to a plan for long enough," Warne wrote in his column for Britain's Daily Telegraph. "Australia would be halfway through an over or two and he would change plans again. "I can understand that to a certain extent. You are desperate to get a wicket and explore every avenue. "But at times captaincy is about biding your time and sticking to your plans over a long period. He has also got to show some patience." Nothing that Ponting tried in Brisbane seemed to work, but he was quick to point out that bowlers from both teams struggled for penetration on probably the flattest pitch ever for a Gabba Test. Warne said Ponting faced a big test of his leadership as he tried to rouse his troops. "This is the biggest test of Ricky Ponting's leadership of men," he said. "It is fine to dissect the tactical side of his captaincy but this is now about something different. "It is about picking up his players after a hammering in the field. "It is a hard one for any captain, but he has to stand up and be counted and try to inspire his team. "Both bowling attacks are a concern, but England will clearly take more out of this match than Australia. "The only bowler to take a second innings wicket for Australia was a part-timer (Marcus North). Horrible." Warne has huge concerns over Mitchell Johnson. He described Johnson's pace as "pedestrian" and said he appeared worried about the technical elements of his bowling, rather than just charging in and taking wickets. And Warne said new spinner Xavier Doherty was an "honest toiler" who needed to slow his pace in Adelaide where he could play a key role. "It would be a harsh judge who said after one Test match that Doherty has not got it," Warne said. "That would be very unfair. "You need two or three Tests in different conditions before you can make a judgment. "We have seen enough to know he can spin the ball and can play a role. "If he plays at Adelaide, then he needs to work on how to mix up an over. "At the moment he bowls three or four faster ones. It needs to be the other way round."

Saurav Chandidas Ganguly (first name also spelt Sourav) (born 8 July 1972, in Calcutta, West Bengal) is the captain of Indian national cricket team. Tharoor exudes hope IPL Kochi will be a reality

Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor is hoping that the Kochi IPL team will be able to compete in the fourth edition, following the BCCI's decision to postpone a final decision on its fate to December 5. "I think the team will become a reality as BCCI's decision holds some hope to save it," the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram told reporters here on Sunday. Tharoor, who had to resign as Minister of State for External Affairs a year back amid controversies over his role as 'mentor' of the Kochi team, said if the team would do good for cricket in Kerala in particular and sporting activities in general. He was here to attend a private function. At a meeting of IPL's Governing Council today in Nagpur, BCCI put off the decision on the franchise for a third time after expiry of a month-long deadline given to it for sorting out its internal bickering over shareholding. BCCI President Shashank Manohar said the board would take a decision on December 5. Kochi was on the verge of being thrown out of IPL due to shareholding dispute between the consortium's investors. But the franchise owners reached a compromise on Saturday.

BCCI defers decision on Kochi to December 5

The IPL governing council has deferred its final decision on Kochi franchise to December 5. Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, said that the Kochi owners had submitted their reply on Saturday evening to the board's termination notice asking them to resolve their differences. He said the council did not have enough time to review Kochi's response at its meeting in Nagpur on Sunday morning, and will seek the board's lawyers' opinion before taking any decision. "They submitted a new ownership pattern yesterday," Manohar said at a media conference, immediately after the hour-long meeting. "We had no time to examine it. All of you are aware that everyday we are in court in a legal battle and hence we would like to have the opinion of our legal experts before we take any decision." As part of the new agreement Rendezvous Sports, the promoters of the franchise, have agreed to shrink their ownership stake to allow the rival investors group to have a bigger say in running of the company, which will be now called Kochi IPL Cricket Pvt. Ltd. "They have entered into an MoU whereby the stakes of Rendezvous is diluted from 26% to 10%," Manohar said. "They have also given various affidavits which all need to be looked into." This latest patch-up among the owners is a fresh twist to the long-running saga at the Kochi franchise which has been riven with differences right from its day of inception. The biggest problem has been the ownership pattern with the investors unhappy about the promoters holding 26% of sweat equity. The investors in the consortium - Anchor Earth, Parinee Developers, Rosy Blue and Film Wave -hold 74% of the equity. The remaining 26% has been given to the Gaikwad family - Shailendra, his brother Ravi and their parents plus a few others, all part of Rendezvous Sports World - as free equity for services rendered in successfully bidding for the franchise. The league's governing council, at its emergency meeting on October 27, felt Kochi was far from resolving those issues and issued a notice asking both factions to explain why the franchise should not be scrapped. The chances of both factions reaching a compromise seemed bleak when the investors sent a letter on Wednesday to Manohar, stating that they were withdrawing support to the franchise because of the inability to resolve the problems with the promoters.

The company, Populous, has gained a worldwide reputation for its stadium designs after success with Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium, Gold Coast's Skilled Park and the main arena for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Trade Minister Stephen Robertson, who plans to meet with Incheon Mayor Sang-soo Ahn today during his Asia trade mission, said it was a major coup for the company. "This contract in Korea, with work now well under way in Brisbane, is creating jobs and assisting to cement Queensland's reputation as a leader in the international sporting infrastructure and event industry," Mr Robertson said. "A team of 10 architects in Brisbane is working on the project." Populous had also undertaken design consultancy for major projects across Asia, such as China's Tianjin XiQing Sports Park for the 2013 East Asian Games and Taiwan's Taipei Dome, a 40,000-seat covered baseball arena. "Populous's design work is synonymous with quality sporting events around the world, but this new deal in partnership with a local firm to design the 70,000- seat Incheon stadium is the company's first foray into Korea," Mr Robertson said. "The stadium project is exciting in that it promotes a new era of designing sustainable venues for major events. "The stadium will be designed so that it can be reduced in size to 30,000 capacity following the Games." Mr Robertson said Queensland merchandise exports to Korea were worth more than $6.3billion, ranking Korea the state's third-largest merchandise export destination. The 17th Asian Games – the continent's largest sporting event – is expected to attract about 12,000 athletes and staff from 45 countries and regions. Populous senior principal Andrew James, who will address the Asia Pacific Cities Summit about the new stadium in Incheon on Thursday, said it was an innovative design. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973 in Mumbai, India. He went to Shradashram Vidyamandir, a high school in Mumbai, where he began his cricketing career under his coach Ramakant Achrekar. He attended the MRF Pace Foundation during his schooldays to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who saw him training, was not much impressed and suggested that Tendulkar should focus on his batting instead. Indian team was the best in Asian Games: Sandeep Singh

NEW DELHI: Disappointed with the bronze medal finish at the Asian Games, ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh on Sunday said that the Indian hockey team was the best in the quadrennial event but lack of video referral system deprived the team of a well-deserved victory against Malaysia in the semifinal. India had defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the league phase and defending champion Korea in the bronze medal play-off. The Rajpal Singh-led team lost to Malaysia through Muhammad Amin Rahim's golden goal in the semis despite leading 3-2 till the 67th minute. Amin had earlier converted a penalty corner to equalise. The former captain, who scored the highest number of goals (11) in the tournament, echoed the sentiments of chief coach Jose Brasa in condemning the standard of umpiring. "After watching the videos of the semifinal we realised that the penalty corner, from which Malaysia scored their third goal, should actually have been a hit in our favour. The ball hit the foot of a Malaysian before it touched Gurbaj Singh. Similarly we deserved a penalty stroke at the last minute. It was poor umpiring which put us out of the title contention," Sandeep said. "India was definitely the best team in the tournament. We had defeated Pakistan and Korea. We were better than other teams in all departments of the game," he said. The ace full back was playing in his first Asian Games and wanted to give his best. "I could not play Doha Asiad and the World Cup in 2006 due to the unfortunate bullet injury. This was my first Asian Games and I wanted to be part of the gold-medal winning team. My personal aim was to score the maximum goals and my conversion rate was more then 75 per cent. I am happy with my performance but not winning the yellow metal will haunt us for a long time to come," he said. Asked about how the team members lifted their morale after the semifinal loss he said, "we wanted to win at any cost to finish on the winning note." "We were disappointed (at the loss) but we wanted a podium finish. A medal is a medal and bronze was still there in our hand." Sandeep has not thought about the Olympic qualifiers as yet neither he thinks that the tragedy of losing the last qualifiers will add additional pressure on the team. "I had not played the qualifiers in 2008 but I am sure that there will be no additional pressure on the team. If we continue the rhythm, we will win the qualifiers and play in the London Olympics in 2012," said Sandeep. Sandeep, however, declined to comment on the issue of renewal of coach Brasa's contract which is expiring on November 30th. "This is between Brasa, SAI and Hockey India. I would not like to comment on it," he said.

India has chance to regain 2nd place

Dubai : India has the chance to regain its second place in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship when the side faces New Zealand in its five- match ODI series that begins on Sunday in Guwahati while Zimbabwe has travelled to Bangladesh and a good series there could see the hosts rise to eighth on the rankings. Currently Sri Lanka is in second position with 118 points – one ahead of India. But all this could change depending on how the various upcoming series pan out between India and New Zealand, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and also the Sri Lanka versus West Indies ODI series. If India wins it five-match ODI series against New Zealand, it is guaranteed second place in the championship table even if Sri Lanka beats the West Indies in its upcoming series. A 5-0 win for India will put it on 121 ratings points – seven behind Australia who currently top the table. Should Sri Lanka win its series against West Indies also 5-0 the side will sit in third place – while if India wins 3-2 it will still climb to second place. Should India lose its series 5-0 to New Zealand it would see the side drop to fifth, while Dan Vettori ’s team could rise to sixth should it beat Mahendra Singh Dhoni ’s men 4-1 or more. However a 3-2 series win would see the Black Caps rising to sixth on 101 points while India would drop down to fourth on 114 points. A 5-0 series win for Bangladesh over the visiting Zimbabwe could see the team rise to 70 ratings points and occupy eighth place, pushing West Indies to ninth spot. Should Bangladesh win the series 3-2 or lose it by any margin it will not rise in the championship and Zimbabwe has the opportunity to rise up to 10th place. The challenge for Zimbabwe is a tough one for especially after Bangladesh ’s recent run of success in the ODI format at home against New Zealand. Sri Lanka’s upcoming series against the West Indies could see the side relinquish its recently acquired second-place should Darren Sammy ’s side beat Kumar Sangakkara’s men but even a 5-0 whitewash of the home side would not see the West Indies rise out of eighth place – it would reach 87 ratings points but still not move.

Sebastian Vettel's incredible winter continued this evening as he joined forces with fellow Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher to give Germany victory in the Race of Champions' Nations' Cup contest for the fourth consecutive year. The annual end-of-season RoC showdown between stars from across all motorsport disciplines, who fight it out in one-on-one contests in a variety of cars around an arena, has moved to Germany for the first time this year, taking place in Dusseldorf. At first it looked like Schumacher and Vettel might be hard- pressed to continue their Nations' Cup winning streak, as both suffered shock defeats in the initial heats - Vettel losing out to Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana, both American extreme sports stars, and Schumacher being pipped by Belgian IndyCar driver Bertrand Baguette. But winning their other three group-stage heats allowed Schumacher and Vettel to sneak through on a tie-break at the expense of Team USA's Pastrana and Carl Edwards, the German duo's best times being crucially slightly quicker.

When Serena Williams withdrew from the Hopman Cup it was hinted that she could also skip the 2011 Australian Open, but now it is official that Serena will not be defending her title at the Grand Slam in Melbourne. The reason is again her foot injury, which has been standing behind her withdrawals from tournaments ever since she won Wimbledon in the middle of the past season. The Super Bowl final would go ahead in February as planned, but everything from March onwards would be halted, from summer training camps through to the planned start of the professional 32-team, four- month season in September. Given the hundreds of millions of dollars that team owners would lose and pressure on them from TV companies, the chances of a deal being struck eventually are high. But US sports have been brought to a standstill in the recent past by such disputes, including the loss of the 1994-95 baseball season and the 2004-05 ice hockey season. In an interview to be broadcast this weekend on Bloomberg television, the executive director of the National Football League Players Association, DeMaurice Smith, issued his strongest warning yet, saying a lockout is a "near certainty". He put the loss in wages to players at $5bn (£3.2bn), and said team owners and local economies would also suffer. "The magnitude of the loss would be at the very least about $160m to $170m per team city," Smith said. "That is a conservative estimate of the economic impact." The team owners are seeking to cut players' wages, saying they are too high at a time when the cost of running teams, such as the building of new stadiums or their upkeep, is rising. Players get an average of $1.5m a year. The owners, who want the players' overall pot cut by $1bn, are bringing existing contracts to an end in February, two years early. The players are happy with the existing contracts and are demanding they be honoured. The owners have the advantage of an extraordinary deal with television companies in which they get $4bn whether games are played or not. But the players' union has power, too: the public outcry that would result from a lockout. "We know they have an economic leverage over us. Those TV contracts [are] a huge economic hammer that hangs over the players," Smith said. "But when it does come to leverage, about understanding the necessity of sacrifice, teamwork, our players believe they are this game. I believe that we have a tremendous amount of leverage." The union has tried to recruit the support of members of Congress as well as the White House, but has had only limited success so far, with politicians unwilling to become engaged in labour disputes. Ken Gude, who worked for the Washington Redskins in 2000 and now works at the Democratic- friendly thinktank Centre for American Progress, said today: "I can't actually believe the NFL would be stupid enough to jeopardise its position with the American people in a period of difficult economic times when they argue over the allocation of millions of dollars." If the lockout goes ahead, players will stop being paid from March onwards. The annual draft, a high-profile event where teams select new players, would go ahead in the spring, but the training camps that begin in the summer would not happen. The next season is scheduled to begin on 9 September. Unlike baseball and basketball, the playing season is relatively short, ending on 2 January, with the Super Bowl the following month, and teams play relatively few games. One compromise under consideration is that the season be extended from 16 games to 18, which would give the players extra money to make up for the pay cut, but would mean two more games, with attendant injury risks. Unlike association football, the average career of a professional American football player is only 3.6 seasons. The NFL, in a statement earlier this week, criticised the union for trying to politicise the issue. "The union's request for state and local political leaders to intercede in the negotiations ignores and denigrates the serious and far more substantial problems that those leaders, and that state and local workers across the country, face. "We can resolve our own issues as we have done many times in the past."

Guangzhou, Nov 19 (IBNS) Rower Bajrang Lal Takhar on Friday opened a new leaf for India ’s sporting history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold in the Asian Games ’ men’s singles sculls competition in China. Chinese duo Sun Zhengping and Ling Hong clocked 7:22.06 secs for the gold and Kazakh girls Oxana Nazarova and Svetlana Germanovich had a timing of 7:35.13 secs. Kochi wants more time to resolve problems

The consortium that won the bid for the Kochi IPL franchise has asked the BCCI for more time to sort out their internal disputes. The Indian board had originally given the consortium 10 days to work things out beginning October 10. At the end of that period, though, the two factions in the consortium wrote to the board asking for an extension. "We consortium partners are very close to resolving our internal differences and would like the BCCI to give us some more time and have also sought this," Satyajitsinh Gaekwad, the head of Rendezvous Sports, told PTI. "We have not defaulted on any payment to the BCCI and just want some more time." Meanwhile the IPL governing council will meet on Wednesday in Nagpur to decide the fate of the franchise. "The only point on the agenda is Kochi," one of the BCCI officials said on the content of the short notice sent to the panel. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is reportedly assisting the franchise in an advisory capacity, something the board said it was not aware of, but will consider at the governing council meeting tomorrow. "We were never informed because this issue was never there," BCCI vice-President Rajiv Shukla said. "For the first time we are coming to know about this. We will discuss the issue in the meeting tomorrow." Gavaskar was a member of the governing council for the IPL's first three years. He declined to continue on the committee this year after the board decided to stop paying the committee members. The Kochi franchise has been controversial from its very inception in March. Rendezvous Sports World, a consortium of five companies, became the tenth IPL franchise after a successful bid of US$333.33m, but almost immediately ran into trouble over the composition of its ownership, after the discovery of a few "secret partners" in the consortium. A new agreement was then signed by both the parties but fresh controversy broke when Lalit Modi, the then IPL chairman, made the ownership details public on his Twitter feed. Six months after the auction Kochi has still failed to resolve its various internal disputes, which revolve around the distribution of shares in the consortium. The investors are unhappy with the promoters, who do not want to give up the rights to lead the franchise. GUANGZHOU:As serting their supremacy in the sport, India trounced Thailand 28-14 to clinch the inaugural women's kabaddi gold medal in the Asian Games on Friday. India took control of the game very early with aggressive tackling and dismissed the entire Thai team for a two-point bonus before taking a commanding 17-7 lead at the halfway stage of the one-sided final at the Nansha Gymnasium. National coach Balwan Singh termed the triumph in the first appearance at the Games as a "good team effort". "We are proud to have won the gold for the country in a tough competition," he said. "Our defense was very good. We had studied the rival's game. They were very fast but could not wriggle out of our grasp when making raids into our territory," he said. Manager Kumar Vijay said the team did not want to take things easy after the nerve-wrecking one-point semifinal victory over Iran. "Though we were confident of winning the gold, we did not want to take any chances after the close semifinal against Iran yesterday (which India won by one point)," said Vijay. "The score may show it was an easy victory but the Thai girls really put up a good resistance," he said. After conceding a massive first- half lead, the Thai girls tried to make a comeback but the Indians did not allow it to happen with rock-solid defense and better tactical acumen. It turned out to be blessing in disguise and was a well-timed wake up call," he said. Snehal Salunkhe said the Indian girls had played a lot of practice matches with Thailand and the gold was a "dream come true". "We went out relaxed as we have played practice matches with the Thai team before. They had no weaknesses and played well against Iran and beat them (in league). We are taller, stronger while the Thai team is young," she said. "Only in my dreams had I thought we could win gold but now it has come true," she added. Thai coach Bhendigir said he was happy that his team made it to the gold medal match. "The Indians were much better and more experienced. Our main player Alisa was not very effective because of the injury, but we still played well," he added. Indian Ambassdor to China, Dr S Jaishankar, was among the crowd which watched the summit clash.

KOCHI FRANCHISE WITHDRAWS FROM IPL

Unable to resolve their differences,the Kochi franchise have withdrawn from the Indian Premier League barely two days before the expiry of the BCCI deadline, paving the way for the Cricket Board to issue a new tender for a replacement team. The IPL’s Governing Council will meet in Nagpur on November 28 to discuss the issue and is likely to float a new tender. “The IPL Kochi team has sent a letter to BCCI President Shashank Manohar withdrawing from the league. The IPL Governing Council were now deliberate on the issue and would take a decision on the matter,” a top BCCI official said. The BCCI had given IPL Kochi termination of 30 days to sort out its problems but the wrangling within the consortium continued nonetheless

The 2010 Asian Games,also known as the XVI Asiad is a multi-sport event in Guangzhou, China that began on 12 November and finishes on 27 November 2010. India well on course for sixth Asiad kabaddi gold

GUANGZHOU: Five-time gold medallists and title favourites India stormed into the final of men's kabaddi competitions in the Asian Games with a comfortable victory over Japan on Thursday. India, who have clinched the gold in every edition of the quadrennial event since the game's introduction in 1990, thrashed Japan 52-17 in a lop-sided semifinal at the Nansha Gymnasium. India proved too strong for the hapless Japanese as they dominated the proceedings from the start and raced to a 26-5 lead in the first half. Even though Japan raised their level of play after the change of ends by pocketing 12 points, it was not enough to down the Indians who comprehensively sealed the match by scoring 26 more points. India will now take on Iran in the gold medal clash on Friday. Iran had earlier defeated Pakistan 17-16 in a pulsating first semifinal in the men's event. Later in the day, India will take on Iran in the semifinals of the women's event.

Harbhajan Singh shines as India dismiss New Zealand to win Test series

New Zealand's batsmen surrendered meekly to India in the second innings on a turning day-four pitch at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur to give the hosts a 1-0 series win today. The fast bowler Ishant Sharma and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, with three wickets each, led the attack who dismissed the tourists for 175 to win the deciding Test by an innings and 198 runs with more than a day and a half to spare. Rahul Dravid got the man-of- the-match award for his patient 191 in the first innings for India. Harbhajan was named the player of the series, having added the wickets of Gareth Hopkins and Ross Taylor to that of Tim McIntosh, the one New Zealand wicket to fall yesterday. "It's been a satisfying series, especially with the bat, but I think I could have got a few more wickets," the off-spinner, who scored two centuries in the series, said. The 30-year-old praised the pitch and said it had offered help to both batsmen and bowlers. "This was what we call an Indian wicket. If you are a good bowler you can take wickets and if you are a good batsman you can score runs," Harbhajan said. "This was probably the best wicket I have played on for many years now." The lanky Sharma attacked the stumps and clean bowled Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Chris Martin. The left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha removed Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill leg-before in consecutive deliveries and Suresh Raina chipped in with the wickets of Jesse Ryder and the New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori, with his part-time off-spin. Asian Games boxing: Kavita settles for a bronze

Guangzhou, Nov 24 (IANS) India's Kavita Goyat settled for a bronze after losing her semi-final bout to Jinzi Li of China in the women's boxing at the Asian Games here Wednesday. Goyat lost 1-5 to in the 69-75 kg weight category. The Chinese opened up a 3-1 lead in the first round and added two more points in the fourth round. Li will take on Mongolia's Undram Erdenesoyol in the final. Later in the day, India's four-time world champion Mary Kom will take on another Chinese, Cancan Ren, in their semi-final in 48-51 kg. In the men's event, as many as seven Indian boxers will compete in semi-finals in various weight categories.
