NBA - Garnett, Rondo pace Celtics over Bulls
and Rajon Rondo led all
five Boston starters into
double-digit scoring as the
Celtics eased to a 104-92
victory over the Chicago
Bulls on Friday.
The Atlantic Division-leading
Celtics have won six consecutive
games to improve to 15-4, while
the Bulls have lost two in a row
to slip to 9-8 for the season.
Garnett had 20 points and a
season-high 17 rebounds and
Rondo scored 12 points and had
19 assists. Fellow starters Paul
Pierce scored 18 points, Ray
Allen added 14 and Shaquille
O'Neal scored 12.
Derrick Rose led the Bulls with
20 points, despite shooting just
7-for-17.
"I really liked the way Kevin
(Garnett) asserted himself on
both sides tonight," Pierce said.
"He stepped up to the challenge,
guarding (Joakim) Noah,
guarding (Carlos) Boozer,
knowing that's the meat of their
front line.
"He went out there trying to be
better than everybody. That's the
vintage Kevin we know. He's
shown a lot of flashes of his old
self this week."
The Celtics opened the third
quarter with a 17-6 run to
stretch their 53-48 halftime lead
to 16 points, led by Rondo, who
scored eight points during the
stretch.
Noah had a double-double for
Chicago with 14 points and 11
rebounds, but lost his head-to-
head battle with Garnett.
"It's tough because we lost right
now, but you know they're a hell
of a team and that's what we're
striving to be, one of the best
teams in the game," said Noah,
son of former French Open
tennis champion Yannick.
Boston started the game quickly
and opened a 14-point first
quarter lead but with the Celtics
starters benched, the Bulls
rallied in the second quarter to
tie the game on three occasions.
"We have to do a better job
containing the ball," Bulls coach
Tom Thibodeau said. "Our weak
side has to be more alert. We
have to have better body
position on cuts. We have to
defend with greater intensity."

Arsene Wenger blasts outdated FIFA
FIFA's decision to snub
England's 2018 World Cup bid
as one from the "Middle Ages".
The Arsenal boss was an official
supporter of the England 2018
campaign and a video message
from him was shown to FIFA
committee members as part of
our presentation.
But Wenger insists football's
governing body must now drag
their decision-making process
into the 21st century after
England's bid received just TWO
votes and Russia were awarded
the tournament.
The Frenchman said: "I'm very
sad because I supported that
bid as much as I could.
"I am sad for the people who
have a passion in England for
football. I don't believe FIFA
was conscious of how much it
meant to people here.
"I watched how much the
people worked for this bid and
they put some unbelievable
quality work in."
Wenger has called for future
World Cups to be allocated on
a more scientific basis, taking in
the relative merits of the
technical bids.
He added: "It looked to me a
little bit of a Middle Age way to
decide. You would like to have
much more technical criteria
than human criteria.
"You could have 100 criteria for
example with a different weight
and you put that in a computer
and the best comes out.
"It doesn't look right in modern
life that people have to go over
there and lobby and say 'please
believe in us.' I would like to see
it be more technical.
"You have to work in the
modern life to get all suspicion
out. Is the suspicion right or
wrong I don't know, but you
don't want a vote of that
importance to be the subject of
suspicion."
Wenger was mystified at how
England could poll just two
votes from the 22 FIFA
members.
He said: "I personally cannot
understand that. I was a great
supporter of that bid. You have
to take it on board and get on
with it.
"It has not been played here for
a long, long time and this
country created the sport.
"That's why I say you should
have 100 criteria, the technical,
commercial, the fact that the
country never had the
competition before could be
one of them and give them a
different weight and decide.
"That criteria cannot be the only
one that is taken into
consideration before a decision
of that magnitude is made.
"Russia is a good candidate and
congratulations to them but we
all do not know why the
England bid has failed so
much."
On the effect of the media
investigations into FIFA
members, Wenger added: "Did
it help? Certainly not."
Obama: Qatar wrong choice for 2022
president, has said that Fifa, the
world governing football body
erred in awarding the 2022
World Cup to Qatar instead of
his country.
"I think it was the wrong
decision," Obama told reporters
at the White House on
Thursday.
He said he remained optimistic
that the US team would make it
to the finals.
Fifa selected Qatar over bids
from the US, Japan, South
Korea and Australia to play host
for the games in 2022.
Russia won the right to stage
the 2018 World Cup.
The US Football Federation
spent millions of dollars on its
bid. Bill Clinton, the former US
president, was highly involved in
the process and participated in
the closing presentation.
Those pushing the US bid had
hoped that bringing the World
Cup back to the country for the
first time since 1994 would
boost the slow but steady
growth of football in America.
Qatar hailed Thursday's decision
as a victory over misconceptions
about the country's bid.
The Gulf state was initially seen
as an outsider, regarded by
many as too small and hot to
stage the tournament.
It will now become the smallest
country to host the World Cup
after convincing Fifa that its
plans to build carbon-neutral
air-conditioned stadiums to
combat the searing summer
heat are viable.
Thanking Fifa for their "bold
vision", Sheikh Mohammed bin
Hamad al-Thani, the bid
committee chairman, said: "We
started off being written off, the
unconventional bid, the bid that
nobody saw coming, that
nobody thought had a chance
to win".
"As you can recall, there were
several tournaments with similar
climates to Qatar but because
of the misconceptions, it was
difficult to combat those, to
prove ourselves on the world
stage.
"One of the most important was
Qatar cannot do it because
Qatar is too hot. It's very
important to have faith as Fifa
did when they went to South
Africa in 2010 and it's important
to get beyond these
perceptions."
Qatari triumph
Sheikh Mohammed said that
another misconception was that
women in the Middle East were
not allowed to play football,
adding that Qatar was setting
up a professional women's
championship.
"The perception that women
are oppressed is another wrong
perception," he said.
"We will deliver with passion
and make sure this is a
milestone in the history of the
Middle East and a milestone for
Fifa."
Sheikh Mohammed said Fifa's
decision was "a statement of
trust, of loyalty to the game".
"On behalf of millions of people
in the Middle East, thank you
for believing in us, thank you
for having such bold vision. I
can promise we will not let you
down," he said.
"Most importantly [for the
people of the Middle East],
rather than watching a World
Cup overseas across thousands
of miles, it's finally at their
door ... finally being recognised
by Fifa as an integral part of the
footballing world.
"To Fifa, thank you for
acknowledging this is the right
time for the Middle East, we
have a date with history," he
said.
Russia hosts 2018 World Cup, Qatar for 2022
has announced Russia and
Qatar as hosts of the 2018 and
2022 World Cup tournaments
respectively.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter
announced the verdicts at a
gathering of the football
hierarchy in Zurich moments
ago.
Russia beat rival bids from
England, Portugal-Spain,
Netherlands-Belgium to host the
football mundial for the first
time.
Qatar also edged out Australia,
the United States, South Korea
and Japan also for a historic first
time hosting.
Brazil will host the 2014 FIFA
World Cup, which will be the
20th FIFA World Cup.
Thursday's decisions came after
the bidding countries made their
final presentations with Blatter
announcing that a secret ballot
of Fifa's 22 executive members
decided the winners.
FIFA member: Media ruined England bid
committee member has said
England's World Cup bid failed
so utterly because of the
country's media investigations
into the world governing body.
Junji Ogura, who was thought to
favour England's bid to host the
2018 tournament, was
impressed by a presentation in
Zurich that included David
Beckham, Prince William and
prime minister David Cameron.
He said that investigations by
the Sunday Times and the BBC's
Panorama programme had
irretrievably harmed the
country's chances however.
"I thought England was a very
strong candidate," Ogura told
the BBC. "Their presentation
was one of the best
presentations.
"But I think there was a big
influence from the BBC and the
Sunday Times. These reports
possibly influenced people. It
made damage for some
people."
Russia was chosen to host with
England crashing out of the
contest in the first round with
only two votes, including that of
former FA chairman Geoff
Thompson.
Reports have circulated that
FIFA president Sepp Blatter gave
a private address to the
members of the executive
committee before voting took
place, reminding them of the
investigations.
"We have had difficulties with
them," he said, according to the
Daily Mail's Charles Sale.
Surprisingly it is also reported
that the second member to vote
in favour of England was African
football president Issa Hayatou,
the subject of one of the probes
into irregularities.
Asked whether he had voted for
England, Ogura replied: "I
cannot say anything. It's totally
complicated. Nobody will say
which country they voted for."
Spain-Portugal and
Netherlands-Belgium were the
other two bids to miss out, while
Middle Eastern state Qatar won
the right to host in 2022.

AIDFI's Ram Pump Project Wins prestigious World Challenge 10 competition
Saturday, BBC World News
broadcasts the final programme
of the World Challenge 10
series, announcing The Only
Way is Up the Alternative
Indigenous Development
Foundation Inc. ’s (AIDFI) Ram
Pump Project as the winner.
Based in the Philippines the
initiative uses the power of a
river ’s flow to literally push
water uphill without any other
energy source.
The hydraulic ram pump has
been around for a couple of
centuries but has failed to date
to realise its potential. AIDFI is
determined to see it come into
its own and has devised a way
of using the pump which has
proved a boon for poor
villagers living in mountainous
regions. The ram pump can save
both hours of back breaking
work carrying water uphill and
cash where expensive water
pumps are replaced. AIDFI has
introduced the pump to over
170 villages and has plans to
spread the benefits far and wide
among poor communities.
Now in its sixth year, World
Challenge is more popular than
ever with more than 167,000
people around the world voting
online for their favourite finalist
– up 40,000 on last year’s votes.
This year 800 nominations were
received from over 70 countries
from which the final 12 projects
featured in World Challenge
2010 were selected. The final
programme airs on BBC World
News this weekend, showcasing
the presentation ceremony
hosted by the BBC ’s award-
winning presenter Zeinab
Badawi. The Only Way is Up
Project will receive a US$20,000
prize grant from Shell. Details
will also appear in Newsweek
magazine.
Two runner-up projects will
each be awarded US$10,000 by
Shell. The first runner-up is Pass
It On, a Peruvian initiative from
Sierra Productiva a federation of
small –scale subsistence farmers
teaching organic techniques to
dramatically improve production
from both livestock and crops.
Second runner-up is A Class
Apart, a project from Guatemala
with the aim of building a
school from recycled waste such
as car tyres and bottles.
Paul Gibbs, Head of
Programmes, BBC World News
says: “The World Challenge
competition is a deserved
favourite with BBC World News
viewers. The competition
continues to highlight these
fantastic projects and raise
awareness globally in the field
of sustainable development.”
Rhona Murphy, Publisher and
Managing Director, Newsweek
International says: “World
Challenge underlines
international support for
individuals and groups showing
an entrepreneurial approach to
environmental and community-
driven projects. We hope that
through World Challenge, more
people will be inspired to put
similar ideas into action. ”
Malcolm Brinded, Executive
Director of the Upstream
International Business, Shell
said: "Access to energy is critical
to driving development and
improving people's quality of
life. This year's winner of World
Challenge, a hydraulic pump
delivering water to remote
villages, could not be a clearer
demonstration of that. At Shell,
we are committed to using new
technology to deliver a lower
carbon energy future, and it's
exciting to see that same
ambition in action in the World
Challenge competition."
World Challenge is a global
competition rewarding grass
roots projects that give
something back to their
communities. It is run by BBC
World News, the BBC ’s
international news channel, and
Newsweek, the weekly global
current affairs magazine, in
association with Shell. This year ’s
series included a special
programme, World Challenge:
Down To Business, which saw
sustainable business advisor Leo
Johnson visit two previous
finalists to give them business
advice to help raise global
awareness of their projects.

Sreesanth, Raina rested for last three ODIs
Khan, who missed the first two
matches due to a injury, on
Thursday returned to the Indian
team for the next three games of
the ODI series against New
Zealand while the selectors
decided to rest batsman Suresh
Raina and pacer Sreesanth
ahead of the upcoming South
Africa series.
The selectors announced two
separate teams for the third ODI
in Baroda on Saturday and
fourth and fifth matches of the
series in Bangalore and Chennai
on December 7 and 10
respectively.
India Vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI: India Won by 9 Wickets, Lead Series by 3-0
ODI against New Zealand being
played at Reliance Stadium,
Vadodara by 9 wickets in 39.3
overs. Now, India lead the five-
match series 3-0 following easy
victories in the matches in
Guwahati, Jaipur and Vadodara.
Captain Gautam Gambhir once
again led from the front with the
bat to give India victory.
Gautam Gambhir was once again
crowned as the Man of the
Match for his unbeaten 126.
The way he rotated his bowlers
around and took the decision to
field first was really remarkable.
He converted an easy chase into
a ridiculously easy one, once
again dominating the opening
partnership, scoring 78 out of
115.
Chasing 225 for victory, India
comfortably scored the runs.
Gambhir slammed 126 from just
117 balls, hitting 16 boundaries,
while Murali Vijay scored 30
runs, before he was run out.
Gambhir added 115 runs in 112
balls for the opening wicket with
Murali Vijay. Thereafter, Virat
Kohli joined the Gambhir and
added 63 runs.
Earlier in the day, India won the
toss and once again decided to
field first. Indian bowlers
restricted the New Zealand at
just 224 runs for the loss 0f 9
wickets in 50 overs. Indian
bowlers took wickets at regular
intervals.
New Zealand All-rounder James
Franklin finished unbeaten on
72, hitting five boundaries and six
in his 108-ball knock. At a time,
Kiwis were reeling at 106 for
seven, but Franklin and Nathan
McCullum (43 from 53 balls)
repaired the damage as they put
on 94 runs from 107 balls for
the eighth wicket.
Zaheer Khan with his superb
bowling performance claimed
two wickets for 31 in eight overs,
while Munaf Patel bowled a
miserly spell of one for 28 in ten
overs. R Ashwin took two for 49
in nine overs and Yusuf Pathan
took two for 27 in eight overs.
Match Summary:
New Zealand Innings: Fall of
wickets: 1-2 (BB McCullum, 0.2
ov), 2-19 (Guptill, 4.5 ov), 3-34

2nd Test: England 90/1 at lunch on Day 2
Australia struck
early to take the
prize wicket of
England captain
Andrew Strauss but Alastair
Cook and Jonathan Trott eased
the tourists to 90-1 at lunch on
the second day of the second
Ashes Test on Saturday.
Scorecard
Cook (35) and Trott (39)
enjoyed a record unbeaten
stand of 329 in the first Ashes
Test and again looked a
formidable partnership as they
chased Australia's first innings
total of 245 on a blistering hot
day at the Adelaide Oval.
Recalled fast bowler Doug
Bollinger gave the hosts a
dream start by clean bowling
Strauss for one run on his third
Ashes delivery, delighting much
of the packed house basking in
the morning sun.
The wholehearted Bollinger,
steaming into the England
batsmen with protective white
war paint daubed on his face,
almost had a second scalp when
Trott, on 10, sliced a drive to
gully but Mike Hussey failed to
hold a low catch.
Trott had already survived a
earlier scare after a mix-up with
Cook when he was on nine, but
Xavier Doherty missed the
wicket when a direct hit would
have comfortably run the
batsman out.
England's stunning start to the
test on Friday, when they
reduced the Australians to 2-3
in the first three overs, was fired
by Trott's accurate throw to run
out Simon Katich.
Australia dropped Mitchell
Johnson and overhauled their
fast bowling unit for the second
test after Cook (235 not out)
and Trott (135 not out)
hammered them at the Gabba.
Local quick Ryan Harris is also
making his Ashes debut in place
of Ben Hilfenhaus, while Peter
Siddle retained his spot on the
back of six wickets and a hat-
trick in England's first innings.
All three struggled to get any
movement on Saturday morning
after Bollinger's early
breakthrough with the Adelaide
track again looking like a
batting-friendly surface.
England are hoping to retain the
Ashes a earn a first series
triumph in Australia in 24 years.
China funded Indian team to win water polo gold
single medal
winning
opportunity at the just
concluded Asian Games is no
secret. They successfully lobbied
for the inclusion of popular
Chinese sports like Weiqi and
Xianqqi in the 16th edition of
the Games. They even denied
entry to a strong Indian
equestrian team to help the
Chinese riders.
But as strange as this may
sound, the same Chinese
authorities 'sponsored' a weak
Indian women's water polo
team that competed in the
quadrennial event. The China
Waterpolo Association worked
overtime to ensure that the
Indian eves arrived in
Guangzhou in time for the
competition. Their travel
documents were processed with
due diligence even as some of
the Indian journalists waited for
months to get the visa approval.
It spent around Rs 6 lakh for
the 15-member contingent's air
travel. Besides, the players were
provided accommodation at the
Games Village.
Why did China take such a huge
interest in the participation of an
Indian team? Reason: They got
one more gold medal from an
event which was on the verge of
becoming a non-medal sport.
Women's water polo, which
made its debut in Guangzhou,
had attracted only three entries.
So the presence of a fourth
team became inevitable to be
counted as a medal event. At
this juncture, CSA requested the
Swimming Federation of India
(SFI) to send the Indian team.
China spent a lot of energy and
money to get India's
participation. They got the
reward in the gold medal, a top
official from Asia Swimming
Federation told TOI on
condition of anonymity. Fancied
China clinched the gold,
demolishing the other three
opponents. Kazakhstan took
home the silver while Uzbekistan
claimed bronze.
The Indian eves, as expected,
cut a sorry figure, finishing at
the bottom of the table. They
conceded 96 goals in three
matches -- a whopping average
of 32 goals per match -- while
managing to score only six
goals. China and Kazakhstan
fired 38 goals each against India
while Uzbekistan pumped in 20.
Back home, swimming observers
raised a hue and cry over the
team's pathetic show. But SFI
general secretary Virendra
Nanavati remains unfazed and
defends the federation's
decision to send the team. "CSA
had offered an all-expenses
paid trip for our women's team.
Had we not sent our team,
waterpolo's future at the Games
would have been in jeopardy,"
he told TOI.
"We had picked the team for
the Commonwealth Waterpolo
Championship scheduled to be
held in the first week of
November in Chennai.
Unfortunately, it was cancelled
following the withdrawal of
Canada, England and New
Zealand. We had the team
ready at our disposal. When we
got the request from our
Chinese counterpart, we
decided to send them
immediately," he added. "We
wanted water polo to remain as
an event at the Asian Games.
The OCA may be tempted to
drop the event in the next
edition citing lesser number of
entries."
Nanavati also said the federation
did not take a single penny from
the players. "It's an all-expenses
paid trip. Then why should we
take money from the players?"
he asked.
On the composition of the team,
Nanavati said all the national
campers, who had a passport
when the invite came, were
allowed to go to China. "It is not
true that players from Police
were denied the opportunity.
Two Police players were there in
the camp, and only one had a
passport," he added.
