Neymar, Pedro score as Barcelona cruise into Copa del Rey pre-quarters

Madrid:  La Liga leaders Barcelona comfortably secured their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 3-0 win over third-tier Cartagena on Tuesday, to seal a 7-1 win on aggregate.

Cartagena threatened to embarrass their illustrious hosts when Zurdo struck the post midway through the first-half. However, any hopes the visitors had of a famous victory were quashed when Pedro neatly swept home Martin Montoya's cross for his third goal of the tie.

Without a host of regular starters, Barca struggled to create clear-cut openings all evening but they were gifted a second goal 23 minutes from time when Mariano Martinez turned Cristian Tello's cross into his own net.

And Neymar rounded off the scoring with his sixth goal in his last three games when he headed home Andres Iniesta's cross three minutes from time. Barca will now face Getafe in the last 16 after the Madrid side thrashed Girona 4-1 to secure their place in the next round by the same score on aggregate.

Osasuna, fresh from their 2-2 draw against Real Madrid on Saturday, will face Los Blancos again in January should Madrid overcome Olimpic Xativa on Wednesday as the Navarrans progressed on away goals after a 1-1 draw at home to Malaga on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Levante beat second division Recreativo Huelva 4-0 to also progress 4-1 on aggregate

Virat kohli no.1

Virat Kohli has become the No. 1 ranked batsman in ODIs after the just concluded India-Australia series, which India won 3-2.

Kohli scored 344 runs in 5 innings, averaging 114.66 with the bat. He also scored the fastest and third-fastest hundred by an Indian batsman. He achieved his career-highest rating of 869 on 30th October, which fell to 857 after he was run-out for a duck in the 7th ODI in Bengaluru.

The Indian batsman has displaced Hashim Amla from the top of the ladder, who with 844 points, is the 2nd ranked batsman in ODIs currently. Amla is missing the currentODI series against Pakistan to attend the birth of his child in South Africa.

George Bailey, who was the 2nd highest scorer with 478 runs in the series, has jumped to No. 3 position, his highest career ranking so far.

MS Dhoni is the only other Indian batsman in top 10 at 6th position in the list.

Shikhar Dhawan also achieved his career-high rating of 688 and has jumped to the No. 11 spot.

Rohit Sharma, who became the third batsman to score a double century in ODIs yesterday, and was the top run-scorer (491) from either side in the series, grabbed the No. 15 place with career-high rating of 655 which he achieved after the 7th ODI.

Sachin Tendulkar to play 200th Test at Wankhede

WMumbai: Wankhede stadium has been finalized as the venue for Sachin Tendulkar’s final Test against the West Indies. The game, the second in the series, is set to be played between November 14-18.

The fixture would see the batting ace walking onto the cricket field with the Indian emblem on his chest, for the last time ever.

India and West Indies will play the first Test at the Eden Gardens from November 6-10. The visitors will be arriving in India on October 28.

Tendulkar, who made his Test debut in 1989, had announced his retirement on October 10.

"All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It’s hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it’s all I have ever done since I was 11 years old. It’s been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil, as I call it a day," he was quoted as saying in a BCCI press release.

40-year Tendulkar, has scored 15387 runs from 198 Tests, at an average of 53.86, with with 51 centuries.

India wins Chennai Test by 8 wickets

CHENNAI: India clinched the first Test against Australia with a comfortable eight-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series on Tuesday with their spinners taking all the 20 wickets for only the third time in their Test history.
                 India achieved the target of 50, losing two wickets in the second innings to beat Australia by eight wickets before lunch on the final day of the first cricket Test at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here Tuesday.
Sachin Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 13, assisted by two big sixes, and Cheteshwar Pujara on 8.
Earlier, Australia were all out for 241 in the second innings. Moises Henriques remained unbeaten on 81 and Nathan Lyon (11) was dismissed by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with three for 72.
Australia, resuming at 232 for nine, added just nine runs before being packed up in 30 minutes.
India have taken a 1-0 lead in their 4-match series against Australia by winning the first test in Chennai by 8 wickets. The final day of the test match failed to provide any unnecessary drama with India taking just under half an hour to wrap up Australia's second innings with Ravindra Jadeja getting the wicket of no.11 Nathan Lyon, caught at bat pad for 11. Australia were bowled out for 241, leaving India with just 50 runs to get to win the match. India lost both their openers in the chase, but knocked off the runs in less than 12 overs to land the first blow in what promises to be an enthralling series.
Resuming from their overnight score of 232-9, Australia added another 9 runs in just as many overs this morning as Moises Henriques and Lyon continued to bat for time, treating the bowling on merit. Henriques was fortunate that an inside edge in the very first over of the day from Jadeja bounced over his stumps, but apart from that looked quite solid. The debutant allrounder went on to make an unbeaten 81, an excellent effort following on from his 68 in the first innings.
India were left with exactly 50 runs to get to win the match, and the onus was on both the openers to take the opportunity to spend some time at the crease and get some confidence under their belts before the second test.
