Portugal became the first team to make it to the semi-finals of Euro
2016, beating Poland 5-3 on penalties after the game finished 1-1.
Robert Lewandowski scored a second minute opener for Poland, breaking
his duck for the tournament. Portugal’s youngest ever starter at a
European Championship, Renato Sanches, equalised in the 33rd minute with
a powerful shot from the edge of the area.
There were no more goals in the game as the match headed to the dreaded
penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo started the proceedings and the first seven
takers converted their penalties when Jakub Blaszczykowski took his
shot. Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio made a one-handed save, allowing
substitute Ricardo Quaresma to convert the winning penalty.
