Jayawardene spurs Sri Lanka to thrilling 3-wicket win over Australia

Sri Lanka beat Australia by three wickets with four balls to spare to go top of the tri one-day series at Bellerive Oval on Friday.

Nuwan Kulasekara hit the winning runs as Sri Lanka reached 283 for seven off 49.2 overs in reply to Australia’s 280 for six off 50 overs.

Peter Forrest hit the first century of the tri-series with 104 in Australia’s innings, but it wasn’t enough as man-of-the-match Mahela Jayawardene (85) and Dinesh Chandimal (80) kept Sri Lanka ahead in the run chase.

The Australians looked as if they might fight back for a win with three wickets in the last five overs but Thisara Perera (21 not out) and Kulasekara (4 not out) got Sri Lanka home with some lusty hitting.

The win takes Sri Lanka to the top of the triangular tournament on 15 points, one ahead of Australia, with India slipping four points behind the host nation.

India face a must-win game against Australia in Sydney on Sunday.

Indian eves defeat Canada 4-1

New Delhi: Indian eves dished out a dominating performance to notch up a convincing 4-1 victory over Canada in their second match of the London Olympic qualifiers at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Sunday.

After being held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Ukraine last evening, India today came out all guns blazing with Soundarya Yendala (16th minute), Rani Rampal (19th), Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam (29th) and Anuradha Devi Thokchom (49th) sounding the board.

The world number 20th team, Canada, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Italy yesterday, couldn`t make much penetration and failed to pose much threat to the Indians even though they managed to score a solitary goal in the dying moments through Hannah Haughn (69th).

With this win, India earned three points to lie in the second position along with Italy in the pool. India had bagged one point on Saturday.

The world number 13 India played an aggressive game right from the start and kept the ball in the rival camp for most part of the match.

India earned their first penalty corner as early as in the seventh minute but Anuradha Devi couldn`t make it count as her shot went wide. Three minutes later, Anuradha had another go at the post, but once again she squandered the chance.

At the 16th minute, India got a second PC and this time, skipper Asunta lakra and Soundarya Yendala combined well to put the hosts in the lead. Lakra took the strike with Soundarya deflecting it home.

Three minutes later, Rani Rampal scored from a free hit when she dribbled past a few defenders and hit home from inside the D.

In the 27th minute, Rani Rampal earned India another PC with Lakra taking the strike, which gave way to the fourth PC for the hosts, but the skipper couldn`t make it count again.

One minute later, India earned another PC and Jaspreet kaur took the strike, which culminated into another PC.

However, this time the hosts didn't make any mistake as Lakra and Sushila Chanu (29th) tried out a variation with the latter scoring from the D-top on the right side to take India to a commanding position.

In the second half, Canada looked more agile, but they still found it difficult to make much inroads into the rival half as Indian defenders and midfield were equally alert.

In the 49th minute, Anuradha Devi scored from inside the D after being feed by Rani Rampal to make it 4-0 in India's favour.

In the 69th minute, Canada's Hannah Haughn scored a consolation goal from a goalmouth mellie, but it was too little and too late. Lara was adjudged the player of the match.

Clinical India maul Italy 8-1 in mens Olympic qualifier

After their 15-1 drubbing of Singapore on Saturday, India's match against Italy was also expected to be a high-scoring affair and it turned out to be one as the home team toyed with the Italian defence in the opening half to pump in as many as six goals as against the visitor's one.
However, the second half turned out to be a dampener for the Indians as they could manage just two goals even though they penetrated the Italian defence continuously.
The most heartening thing that came out for India from Sunday's match was their penalty corner conversion rate.
Michael Nobbs wards converted four out of the five penalty corners they earned in the match with Sandeep Singh (4th minute, 22nd, 23rd) alone striking three goals.
Player-of-the-match SV Sunil (30th, 38th) scored two goals while VR Raghunath (12th), Gurvinder Singh Chandi (32nd) and Shivendra Singh (52nd) scored the rest for the hosts.
For Italy, Alessandro Nanni scored the consolation goal. Expectedly, the 41st ranked Italy, who came as a replacement for Egypt in the event, were a mismatch for the eight-time Olympic champions and world ranked 10th, India.
It took India just four minutes to take the lead when Sandeep scored from the home team's first penalty corner with a powerful low drag-flick to the right of Italian goalkeeper Fabrizio Federici.
The Indians earned another penalty corner soon and this time Raghunath found the back of the opposition net with a fierce flick.
Five minutes later Italy pulled one back against the run of play from their first penalty corner. Allessandro Nanni scored from a lose ball after William Cottam missed out on the drag-flick.
Sandeep, however, converted two more penalty corners with in a span of two minutes to make the scoreline 4-1 in favour of the Indians.
After the initial four strikes from penalty corners, India scored two field excellent goals to go into the breather with a comfortable 6-1 lead.
An unmarked Sunil scored the first of the field goals in the opening period after receiving a well measured pass from the right from Tushar Khandker.
Two minutes later, Chandi also registered his name in the scoresheet when he slapped home the ball from the top of the circle.
The Indians started with the same intensity in the second half and took just three minutes to sound the board when Sunil deflected home Sandeep's tantalizing pass down the middle.
Shivendra completed the tally for India when he deflected a Chandi into the Italian goal.
India threatened to score more goals and on two occasions came close but Shivendra and Sunil lacked in finishing.
With this win, India are currently at the top of men's pool with six points from two outings. Even though France has same points as India, they occupy a close second position because of their inferior goal difference.
India will next play France on Tuesday after a rest day on Tuesday, while the Italians will be up against Poland.

Dhoni earns India thrilling tie with Sri Lanka

Mastermind MS Dhoni produced another Houdini-like escape as India tied with Sri Lanka in Tuesday's one-day match in Adelaide.
Just two days after his last over heroics downed Australia, Dhoni's finishing flourish almost sank the Lankans, who remain winless in the tri series.
Chasing 237 to win before just 5739 spectators, India needed four runs from Lasith Malinga's final ball.
The Indian captain belted the ultimate delivery over cover, but a diving save by Upul Tharanga stopped the ball short of the boundary - but Dhoni completed three runs to tie the match with both sides scoring 9-236.
Dhoni (58 not out from 69 balls) capitalised on the earlier fine innings of opener Gautam Gambhir (91).
Gambhir followed his 92 in Sunday's win against Australia with another innings of substance, but it was Dhoni's peerless final touches which kept India alive.
Just as he did against the Australians, Dhoni combined with Gambhir in a crucial partnership - which netted 60 runs - until the skipper ran out his opener.
Gambhir's cruel end came when Dhoni pushed to mid on, called a single, then changed his mind - leaving Gambhir unsuccessfully scampering to make his ground.
The 41st over run out left India wobbling at 5-178, but Dhoni wasn't rattled.
He whittled down the equation to 24 runs from the last two overs, and nine from the last.
But crucially Dhoni was off strike for two of the final six balls.
Earlier, Sri Lanka's rising star Dinesh Chandimal top-scored with 81 in their middling total, with support from captain Mahela Jayawardene (43) and Kumar Sangakkara (31).
The 22-year-old Chandimal and his skipper featured in a 94-run partnership which rallied the Lankans after a sluggish start - they were 3-79 in the 20th over.
But both Chandimal, whose polished knock following returns of 37 and 64 in Sri Lanka's initial two losses of the series, and Jayawardene fell within seven costly balls.
Jayawardene was trapped lbw by Indian paceman Vinay Kumar, who impressed with 3-45 from 10 overs.
And Chandimal perished in the next over, run out to end his 91-ball innings.
Their dismissals were compounded when Thisara Perera (five) was out two overs later to the bowling of Ravi Ashwin (2-30 from 10 overs) as the Lankans lost 3-11 and all momentum, with their tailenders unable to finish with a run flourish.
The tie was marked by controversy, with India's batsmen facing one less delivery than they should have - the 30th over of their innings contained just five balls.
"I'm not complaining," said Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene.
Indian captain Dhoni was remarkably accepting of the mistake.
"There was a five ball over," he said.
"In the past what we have seen is the third umpire interferes and you have to come back and bowl that ball.
"Usually that is what has happened to us, it didn't happen in this game - it's fair enough, nothing much can be done now."

Virender Sehwag wishes Yuvraj Singh speedy recovery

NEW DELHI: Indian opener Virender Sehwag on Tuesday wished teammate Yuvraj Singh, who is undergoing treatment in the US for a malignant tumour between his lungs, a speedy recovery.

"I have heard that Yuvraj is taking chemotherapy. We are hoping he would be fine and fit when he comes back. We all are praying for him," Sehwag said.

Sehwag said he was confident that the southpaw, who played a stellar role in India's 2011 World Cup victory, will emerge victorious in his battle against cancer.

Yuvraj Singh is happy he is in Boston for his cancer treatment and not in India where unwarranted and sentimental attention could have dampened his mood.

Sources close to the ailing cricketer said that Yuvraj keeps talking about the "matter-of-fact attitude" of both the medical staff and patients towards cancer and this has helped him to develop a positive outlook.

"People come in for treatment and leave the hospital after a cup of coffee, smiling," a source close to the family said. "It isn't like India where cancer is treated virtually like a death warrant."

And there's no reason yet to get gloomy about Yuvraj's cancer which was detected early in stage 1 and can be treated completely.

Yuvraj's father Yograj Singh told Times Now on Monday that doctors in Boston have assured the cricketer of a full recovery that will leave him stronger.

He has also been told that people with his kind of cancer - mediastinal seminoma - have often reached the hospital when the disease is in stage IV and have still walked out totally cured.

The southpaw has been under chemotherapy for two weeks and on Wednesday, the third of his nine weeks of the treatment begin, said Dr Nitesh Rohtagi, senior oncologist at Max hospital, Saket

Pakistan whitewash England with third Test win

Pakistan's spinners "outclassed" England's batsmen for a thoroughly deserved 3-0 Test series whitewash in their Middle East 'home from home'.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq knows that much, after today's 71-run success at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium completed the rout on the back of yet more wickets for Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman.
They and Misbah had all the answers to make a mockery of England's world number one status, yet the captain had to admit afterwards he did not have the words to describe exactly how much Pakistan's first whitewash of these opponents means to them and their country.
"I can't really describe how important this series was for us," he said, as he reflected on an entirely dominant performance throughout.
Pakistan, of course, must play their 'home' series hundreds of miles away from their native country because of ongoing political turmoil there.
They also began this first Test series against England since the spot-fixing scandal of 2010 still needing to distance themselves from the sins of those who represented Pakistan so dishonourably in the recent past.
"To win 3-0 is really a wonderful achievement for this team, especially with what was expected before the start against the top team in the world," Misbah added.
"We were expecting England might have problems, because of the slowness of the wickets here.
"I think our bowlers, our spinners, were really outstanding and they just outclassed their batting line-up."
Ajmal and Rehman inflicted a series of batting collapses on England over the past three weeks.
But in the final Test, Pakistan had to overcame a shambolic first innings of their own - which realised only 99.
From that moment, they barely put a foot wrong - limiting England's lead to 42 and then setting the opposition a near record target of 324 to win on the back of hundreds from Younus Khan and Azhar Ali.
"The bowlers did a great job to bowl them out for 141, and after that it was a wonderful performance from Azhar Ali and Younus Khan," said Misbah.

India Dusted Again, Lose ODI Against Aussies By 65 Runs

A lackluster India opened their cricket tri-series campaign on a disappointing note as they slumped to a 65-run defeat against Australia, who yet again exposed the batting chinks of the visitors in a rain-truncated encounter on Sunday.
Australia recovered from a few early jolts to score 216 for five in their 32 overs and then bundled out the visitors for 151 in 29.4 overs at the flood-lit MCG.
The Indians dropped out of form Virender Sehwag from the team but the batting woes, that has plagued the side right through the Test series, continued to haunt them in the first match of the tr-series.
Some of the batsmen got good start but could not translate them into big scores.
India were never in the chase and but for young guns Virat Kohli (31) and Rohit Sharma (21) and their 51-run third wicket stand, India's top order collapsed in a heap to Australian pacemen.
Clint McKay was the most destructive home bowler, taking four wickets for just 20 runs while Mitchell Starc (2/33) and spinner Xavier Doherty (2/36) claimed two wickets each.
It was left-arm paceman Starc who struck early with the scalps of openers Sachin Tendulkar (2) and Gautam Gambhir (5) in his first spell. Bowling full and with the same venom as in Tests, Starc and his new ball partner Ryan Harris came hard at the Indians first up.
Tendulkar was the first one to leave, driving away from his body and being caught brilliantly by a diving Ricky Ponting at point region. Gambhir departed in his now customary fashion, edging a catch behind the stumps to Matthew Wade.

IPL auction 2012: Chennai buy Ravindra Jadeja Jadeja for Rs 9.72 crore

Ravindra Jadeja on Saturday expectedly turned out to be the biggest draw for the franchises with Chennai Super Kings buying the young Indian all-rounder for a whopping USD two million (approx. Rs.9.72 crore) in the players' auction for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League here.
The 23-year-old, whose base price was USD 100,000, went to Chennai after the tie-breaker clause was invoked when two teams -- CSK and Deccan Chargers -- bid the maximum (USD two million) for the Saurashtra player.
Both the franchises were asked to bid a secret amount in the tie-breaker and it was Chennai which managed to outbid Deccan in this.
But the cricketer himself will get paid USD 950,000 as per the contract he had signed with the now-disbanded Kochi Tuskers Kerala last year and even the secret amount that was bid on him by Chennai would go into the BCCI coffers.

Jayawardene will, however, get USD 1.5 million as per his contract last year.
Among other big gainers at the auction, New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum was bought for USD 900,000 by Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum's base price was USD 400,000.
Indian stumper Parthiv Patel went for USD 650,000 to Deccan Chargers, which was quite high from his base price of USD 200,000.
Veteran Indian batsman VVS Laxman, who was a big disappointment during the recent Test series against Australia, went unsold in the auction along with England's James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara and Matt Prior, West Indies' Ramnaresh Sarwan, Adrian Barath and Darren Bravo and South Africa's Mark Boucher.

Dhoni ready to give up captaincy

Sydney: Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is ready to give up Test captaincy if there is a "better man" to replace him.
Calls for his removal as leader in the longest format have grown following India's pathetic show in Tests in England and Australia, where he captained seven of the team's eight consecutive defeats.
Dhoni, speaking ahead of India's first T20 International against Australia here Wednesday, said captaincy is a position that doesn't belong to anyone and should be assigned to someone who is most suited to lead the team at that time.
"It is an added role and responsibility for me. It is not a position that belongs to anyone. The responsibility was given to me three-and-a-half years back. I have been trying to do well, get along with the team, perform well wherever we play," Dhoni told reporters at the ANZ Stadium here Tuesday.
Dhoni added: "It is just a position I hold. It is something I will always look to do well till I am in the job. It is not something I want to stick on to. If there is a better replacement, he can come in. It is a very open thing. At the end of the day, you want India to perform. If there is someone who can do a better job, then it is a place that should be given to him. It is not something you have to cling on to."
During the Test series, Dhoni had said that he might retire from one of the formats to remain fit for the 2015 World Cup. Taking on from there, the 30-year-old said that he will have to give up either of the three formats by the end of 2013 considering the packed cricketing calendar.
"Maybe by 2013 I will have to," Dhoni said.
"It is two years away, and the kind of cricket we are playing - IPL, 45 days; Champions League; and back-to-back series. We have to see where we last. It is not a calendar year where you get a lot of rest, and you get away with small niggles during that rest period."
Dhoni then clarified on comments he made earlier on the tour.
"I said end of 2013 (on his retirement plans). Now it is the start of 2012, and 2013 is two years. I don't know whether I will be alive in two years. That is a long time. What I said was, by the end of 2013, I will have to see whether I can play the World Cup. It wasn't about one format, it was about cricket. I can't play till 2014 and say I am not fit enough to survive till the next World Cup. And you will have a player coming in who has played just 25 games."
